You might have heard Ritt Momney’s name by now, thanks to his career-first Billboard Hot 100 hit with a cover of Corinne Bailey Rae’s 2006 breakout song “Put Your Records On.” And his moniker might sound familiar, since it was inspired by onetime Republican presidential candidate Sen. Mitt Romney.
But Momney (real name: Jack Rutter) is far from the first artist to be inspired by a politician when choosing a stage name. So which politician-inspired name is your favorite?
In a recent interview with Billboard, Momney said he’s never talked to his namesake before, but if the opportunity presented itself, the indie rock act said, “Maybe I’ll set up a meeting some time and go talk abortion rights.”
The Scottish rock band Franz Ferdinand found inspiration from Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose 1914 assassination sparked World War I. “He was an incredible figure as well,” lead vocalist Alex Huntley said back in 2010. “His life, or at least the ending of it, was the catalyst for the complete transformation of the world — he was a pivot for history. But I don’t want to over-intellectualise the name thing. Basically a name should just sound good — like music.”
