Grammy-winning singer Fantasia Barrino, who’s currently pregnant with her third child, appeared on the Tamron Hall Show Thursday (Dec. 17) to recount her “three-year journey” of fertility issues.
While Skyping from her home in North Carolina with her husband Kendall Taylor, Fantasia expressed gratitude for being able to “focus on this gift” of her pregnancy. This will be the couple’s first child together since they got married in 2015, but the last few years hasn’t been smooth sailing in terms of expanding their family.
“Everyone was suggesting IVF [in vitro fertilization] because it wasn’t happening. This was a three-year journey we’ve been on,” the American Idol alum revealed.
She consulted with a doctor, who told her one of her fallopian tubes had closed before saying it had opened back up, and the other tube had closed in a follow-up appointment.
“We decided, ‘Let’s just pause. Let’s let God be God. And if this is something that He wants for us to truly have …’ We were both just like, ‘Let’s just travel; we don’t need more kids, we have grandkids.’ And my mom was like, ‘You guys will regret not having a love child.’”
The “I Believe” singer told talk-show host Tamron Hall that she ended up forgetting about trying to have another baby. But she felt “something different” in the middle of the night and took six pregnancy tests that she previously ordered from Amazon when she and her husband were actively trying.
“I was just like, ‘Forget it!’ And then I woke up one night, and when I was just like, ‘Um something’s different.’ [I] took the test, I took six tests!” the 36-year-old singer continued. “I was like, ‘Oh, just try it,’ and sure enough, I threw the test at him. I was so excited.”
Taylor, 40, chimed in about how “everybody’s journey is different,” but he trusted God that IVF and other methods weren’t meant to be part of their journey and believed it would happen for them naturally. “So when she threw it at me, I was like, ‘Yo, you playing? Are you serious?’” he said. “And from that point, it just increased our faith even more.”
He has one 24-year-old son, Treyshaun, and two grandsons from him — Khoen and Kyan. Fantasia has two children of her own from a previous relationship: her 19-year-old daughter Zion Quari and 8-year-old son Dallas Xavier. She announced she and her husband were expecting their first child together in November during an episode of their video series Taylor Talks, when the singer recalled the story of Rachel in the Bible, who was barren and fervently prayed to God so that she could bare a child. Fantasia said she began “praying like Rachel,” and sure enough, showed off her baby bump that Taylor bent down to kiss.
