Elton John and husband David Furnish posted a throwback post honoring their sixth wedding anniversary on Monday while vowing to keep fighting for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. The couple, who’ve been together for 15 years, were married on Dec. 21, 2014, at their Windsor estate nine months after same-sex marriage became legal in England.
But they fully realize that though they live a privileged, comfortable life, not everyone is as lucky and free as they are. “Today @davidfurnish and I are celebrating two anniversaries: 15 years of Civil Partnership and 6 years of marriage,” John wrote in a post that included a snap of the happy couple in their wedding suits. “Our relationship gets stronger every day, and I am extremely grateful for the love we share and our two beautiful sons.”
But, John added, they realize that they are among the “lucky ones, as millions of gay people throughout the world are discriminated against because of their sexuality. This is a disgrace. We all deserve to love who we want. We will continue to fight for equality for all.” The post ended with a link to the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which is in the midst of its 2020 annual holiday campaign, during which a friend of the foundation has pledged to match all donations up to $75,000.
Earlier this month, John and the EJAF teamed up with TikTok to launch an initiative aimed at getting users involved in raising awareness for Dec. 1’s World AIDS Day.
