As of the latest rankings, dated Jan. 2, 2021, Billboard’s Hot 100 Songwriters and Hot 100 Producers charts expand to 25 positions deep, up from 10 each.
Billboard’s 22 other genre-specific songwriter and producer charts, covering alternative, Christian, country, dance/electronic, gospel, hard rock, Latin, rap, R&B, R&B/hip-hop and rock & alternative, all remain 10 positions in length.
Billboard launched the first 20 songwriters and producers rankings in 2019 and added alternative and hard rock surveys in June 2020. The charts are based on total points accrued by a songwriter or producer for each attributed song that appears on the Hot 100 or respective genre chart. As done with Billboard’s yearly recaps, multiple writers or producers split points for each song equally. As such, the dividing of points will lead to occasional ties for some rankings.
Late holiday hitmaker Johnny Marks returns to No. 1 on the newly-extended Hot 100 Songwriters chart for an eighth total week on top, thanks to five songwriting credits on the latest Hot 100, including three in the top 10. Here’s a recap:
Rank, Artist Billing, Title, co-songwriters in addition to Marks
No. 2, Brenda Lee, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”
No. 4, Burl Ives, “A Holly Jolly Christmas”
No. 10, Chuck Berry, “Run Rudolph Run” (Marvin Brodie)
No. 16, Gene Autry, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”
No. 61, Justin Bieber, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”
Since the Hot 100 Songwriters chart began, only Finneas and Roddy Ricch have spent more weeks on top than Marks, with 10 apiece.
Late musician, producer and record executive Owen Bradley concurrently returns to No. 1 on the Hot 100 Producers chart for a fourth total week at the summit, powered by his production work on Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” (No. 2 on the Hot 100) and Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock” (No. 3).
