John Fogerty prepares to send President Donald Trump off in the next 14 days with his first single in eight years, “Weeping in the Promised Land.”
The 75-year-old rocker takes a moment at the piano to deliver a gospel-tinged performance in which he laments on the state of the nation in the last year of Trump’s presidency, and draws Biblical comparisons to Israelites’ plight from Egypt under Pharaoh’s reign.
He references the president’s public disagreements with Dr. Anthony Fauci and healthcare heroes struggling on the frontlines regarding the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. “Pharaoh shoutin’ down the medicine man,” Fogerty bellows, as well as, “With dread in their eyes, all the nurses are crying.”
Fogerty also touched on the resurgent Black Lives Matter movement following the unjust deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of police. “Out in the street/ On your neck with a knee/ The people are cryin’/ Your words ‘I can’t breathe’ and the white judge say been no crime here,” he sings while pausing a beat to let the protest footage roll.
The former Creedence Clearwater Revival leader is far from being a fan of Trump, after sending him a cease-and-desist order for using the CCR classic hit “Fortunate Son” during one of his campaign rallies.
