With the news that HBO Max is officially bringing back Sex and the City for a 10-episode revival featuring most of our favorite ladies (minus Kim Cattrall’s Samantha Jones), we couldn’t help but reminisce about musicians’ appearances in the hit franchise.
And we’re not talking about John Corbett, who played Carrie Bradshaw’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) perfect fiance Aidan Shaw, though the actor has released two albums and toured with the likes of ZZ Top and Lisa Marie Presley. After all, he was a regular for a few seasons, with a 22-episode run as the handsome and kind furniture designer. No, we’re talking about cameos by celebrated musicians, as well as stars who you may not have known made music.
So pour that Cosmopolitan and take a trip down memory lane with us in your Manolos as we revisit musicians’ appearances in Sex and the City.
Bradley Cooper
Season 2, episode 4
Before you declare that the award-winning actor isn’t a musician, let us remind you that he has a No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 in the form of “Shallow” alongside Lady Gaga from their film A Star Is Born, so that’s qualifies in our book. In this 1999 episode, he plays Jake, a fellow clubgoer who met all of Carrie’s needs for a very brief moment. (Watch)
Matthew Morrison
Season 2, episode 4
The Glee star, who has two albums on the Billboard 200, had a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo as a busboy on the same episode in which Cooper appeared. (Watch)
Jon Bon Jovi
Season 2, episode 13
The rocker played photographer Seth, a handsome man Carrie connects with while waiting to see a therapist after breaking up with Big. (Watch)
Alanis Morissette
Season 3, episode 4
The seven-time Grammy winner appeared as Dawn in the episode titled “Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl.” While attending a party with her 20-something boyfriend, Carrie finds herself playing a game of — quelle horreur! — Spin the Bottle and ends up shyly locking lips with the singer. (Watch)
Torquil Campbell
Season 3, episode 4
The co-lead singer-songwriter for Stars appeared in the same episode as his fellow Canadian Morissette. He played Joel, a friend of Carrie’s boyfriend.
Alan Cumming
Season 4, episode 2
The star of stage and screen — who released his debut album in 2009 — portrayed stylist Oscar. His character first dressed Carrie in Dolce & Gabbana at a fitting for a charity fashion show, then gave her sequined panties to strut in instead for the main event — with, yes, that unfortunate catwalk incident. (Watch)
Geri Halliwell
Season 6, episode 10
The artist formerly known as Ginger Spice played the bubbly Phoebe. Wearing a blue bikini top and super low-riding miniskirt, the singer gushed about enjoying the exclusive Soho House pool while poor Samantha was wilting during a particularly hot and muggy day. (Watch)
David Duchovny
Season 6, episode 10
Duchovny may be best known for playing Fox Mulder on The X-Files, but he’s also dabbled in music, with his 2015 album Hell or Highwater peaking at No. 23 on Billboard’s Americana/Folk Albums chart in 2015. But before he released music, he guest starred on the award-winning show in 2003 as Carrie’s high-school boyfriend Jeremy, who was now living in a psychiatric facility. (Watch)
Jennifer Hudson
The Movie
The Oscar-winning star had a little bit more than a cameo in the first SATC film, playing Carrie’s love-obsessed assistant, Louise. She had moved to the Big Apple after having her heart broken in St. Louis. (Watch)
Liza Minnelli
Sex and the City 2
The iconic performer appeared in the sequel as herself, officiating Stanford and Anthony’s wedding at the beginning of the movie. All bedazzled in sequins, she went on to perform Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” during the celebration. (Watch)
