Oh say can you see … that Lady Gaga is gearing up to perform the U.S. National Anthem once again?
On Thursday morning (Jan. 14), the inauguration committee for President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris announced that Gaga would be joining an already star-studded lineup for the Biden and Harris’ inauguration ceremony on Wednesday, Jan. 20, to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The “Rain on Me” singer is set to perform alongside acts including Tom Hanks, Jennifer Lopez, Jon Bon Jovi, Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato and more.
But this isn’t the first time that Lady Gaga has performed the national anthem. Back in 2016, Gaga also took to the stage at Super Bowl 50 to show off her incredible pipes with a stirring rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Dressed in a sparkling red pantsuit, with some shimmering red glitter surrounding her eyes, Gaga stunned the audience (both in the stadium and watching at home) with an emotionally raw and vocally impeccable rendition of the iconic song.
In the greater context of 2016, though, no one should have been surprised by Gaga’s performance — the singer had spent the previous year proving to the world that she was a “serious” singer. In 2015, after taking home her sixth Grammy for Cheek to Cheek (her jazz standards album with Tony Bennett), Gaga gave another incredible performance at the 87th Academy Awards, singing a Sound of Music medley that fans still uphold to this day as one of her greatest live performances ever.
