Roc Nation Sports, the sports-focused division of Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter’s Roc Nation, has hired former New York Mets general manager and CAA agent Brodie Van Wagenen to serve as COO and head of strategy and business development.
Van Wagenen will report to Carter and Roc Nation Sports president Juan Perez. In his new role he will be responsible for Roc Nation Sports’ long-term objectives and will support its player representation and partnerships business.
“Brodie’s knowledge of the business is indisputable and unparalleled,” said Carter in a statement. “Since we first worked with Brodie, we realized the shared commitment to athletes both on and off the field. He’s always been extended family and now it’s official.”
Van Wagenen began his career as an agent for IMG, ultimately becoming the co-head of CAA Sports’ baseball division, where he represented players like Ryan Howard and Jacob DeGrom. He joined the Mets after the 2018 season but left the club late last year after it was acquired by the hedge fund billionaire Steve Cohen.
“For all of Jay-Z’s strengths and accomplishments, it is his commitment to helping others achieve their goals that stands out to me,” Van Wagenen said in a statement. “At Roc Nation, he and Juan Perez have created an ecosystem whereby the world’s best talent can maximize opportunities in a rapidly changing economy. I am honored and excited to join them in making client dreams become realities.”
