On March 23, 1996, Patty Loveless’ “You Can Feel Bad” topped Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, becoming her fourth of five No. 1s.
Penned by Matraca Berg and Tim Krekel, the song introduced Loveless’ The Trouble With the Truth album, which hit No. 10 on Top Country Albums, marking the fourth of her seven top 10s.
The set generated four additional singles: “Lonely Too Long,” Loveless’ fifth leader; “She Drew a Broken Heart” (No. 4); “A Thousand Times a Day” (No. 13); and the title track (No. 15).
Loveless, a distant cousin to country legend Loretta Lynn, was born in Elkhorn City, Ky., on Jan. 4, 1957. Known for her powerful vocal style, Loveless was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1988. Between 1985 and 2004, she logged 44 Hot Country Songs entries, including 20 top 10s.
Married to record producer Emory Gordy since 1989, Loveless lives in rural Georgia on 170 acres. In August 2016 when Vince Gill celebrated his 25th year as a Grand Ole Opry member, she joined him for a performance of “Go Rest High on That Mountain.”
