On April 8, 2006, Gary LeVox, his cousin Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney, better known as Rascal Flatts, began a four-week stay atop Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart with “What Hurts the Most,” its fifth leader.
Penned by Jeffrey Steele and Steve Robson, the song (first recorded by Mark Wills in 2003) was released from Rascal Flatts’ fourth LP, Me and My Gang, which spent 15 weeks atop Top Country Albums and three atop the all-genre Billboard 200. The ballad also ruled Adult Contemporary and hit No. 6 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.
Rascal Flatts has posted 12 No. 1s on Hot Country Songs and eight on Top Country Albums.
The threesome canceled its planned 2020 farewell tour due to COVID-19 but has left the door open about its future. The members are all working on solo projects, with LeVox’s first Christian music single, “The Distance,” having debuted on the April 3-dated Hot Christian Songs chart.
Meanwhile, the group’s current single, “How They Remember You,” ranks at No. 13 on Country Airplay and No. 29 on Hot Country Songs.
