To celebrate Earth Day, Smithsonian Channel and Paramount+ teamed up to release a powerful documentary on Thursday (April 22) five years in the making.
Cher and the Loneliest Elephant finds the singer and activist in Islamabad, Pakistan, where an elephant named Kaavan has been cruelly held in captivity for more than 20 years. Along with a group of expert wildlife veterinarians, animal aid groups and sanctuary owners, Cher is faced with a set of daunting challenges to move the four-ton elephant more than 2,300 miles in the midst of a global pandemic.
The interest in Kaavan’s freedom was first launched by American veterinarian Samar Khan, who was horrified by the treatment the elephant was receiving and launched a Change.org petition in an effort to raise awareness.
Cher noticed the petition going around on Twitter, and wanted to get involved.
