Chance the Rapper announced on Friday (May 7) that he will release his concert film Magnificent Coloring World with AMC Theatres this summer.
Magnificent Coloring World marks the fifth anniversary of the Chicago rapper’s iconic third mixtape Coloring Book, which he supported with the 2016 Magnificent Coloring World Tour and one-day hometown music festival Magnificent Coloring Day Festival, which set an attendance record for White Sox’s Cellular One Field with upwards of 47,000 concertgoers.
Chance made history at the 2017 Grammy Awards, where the independent artist was nominated for seven awards and won best new artist, best rap performance for “No Problem,” and best rap album for Coloring Book. It was the first streaming-only album to win a Grammy.
“As the first individual music artist to distribute a concert film at AMC, Chance continues to break new ground in entertainment, and we are thrilled to bring this incredible event to the big screen at AMC communities around the country,” Nikkole Denson-Randolph, svp of content strategy & inclusive programming at AMC Theatres, said in a press release. “Chance’s love of not only film, but the communal magic of the cinemas and the shared experience of seeing a film together makes this collaboration even more special.”
Magnificent Coloring World is directed by Jake Schreier and produced by Chano’s House of Kicks and Park Pictures. The concert film will exclusively be released in AMC theaters in summer 2021.
Chance wrote and directed a one-hour virtual holiday concert film Chi-Town Christmas in December, which paid homage to his favorite childhood Christmas movies and TV sitcoms and featured performances of songs from his joint album with Jeremih, Merry Christmas Lil’ Mama: The Gift That Keeps on Giving.
