Ten months after revealing his engagement to model Maya Henry on Good Morning America, Liam Payne shared in a new interview that the couple are going their separate ways. Asked by The Diary of a CEO podcast to clarify an earlier comment about his “parter at the time,” Payne confirmed that things didn’t work out with Henry.
“I am indeed,” Payne said. “Yup … I feel like more than anything at this point, I’m more disappointed in myself that I keep on hurting people.” The singer said he’s annoyed, frankly, with how poorly he’s fared in relationships recently.
“I’ve just not been very good at relationships,” he explained. “And I know what my pattern of things is with relationships, I feel at this point. I’m just not very good at them so I just need to work on myself before I put myself on to somebody else. And I feel like that’s where I got to in my last relationship. I just wasn’t giving a very good version of me anymore, that I didn’t appreciate and I didn’t like being.”
Payne said he feels better out of the relationship, though he doesn’t feel great about the breakup. “It had to happen. I know that’s the corniest way … saying, ‘That’s what’s best for both of us,’” he said. “But it just feels like that.”
Payne shares a 3-year-old son, Bear, with ex-girlfriend Cheryl Cole. The former One Direction singer went public with his romance with Henry in September 2019, and the pair got engaged in August 2020. At press time, it did not appear that Henry had commented publicly.
