Demi Lovato says she is no longer “California sober” but instead, “sober sober.” In other words, she no longer uses marijuana and has completely stopped drinking.
She made the announcement this week after commemorating her late friend Thomas Trussell III, who died of a drug overdose two years ago.
In an earlier interview she explained her partial sobriety and felt that if she cut herself off completely from drugs and alcohol, she would want it more than ever.
She said, “I've learned that shutting a door on things makes me want to open the door even more. I've learned that it doesn't work for me to say 'I'm never gonna do this again.'” She also said she had protocols in place to help prevent her from relapsing on hard drugs like heroin.
Lovato's California sober approach had been criticized by several celebrities in the past. In her post this week she bluntly said that she no longer supports being California sober and wrote that “sober sober” is the only way to be.
