Phoenix is back at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Adult Alternative Airplay chart, as “Alpha Zulu” rises to the top of the Aug. 6-dated survey.
The song is the French band’s second leader, following the two-week reign of “Identical” in late 2020. “Identical” took 13 weeks to reach the top of the chart, while “Alpha” completes its trip in its eighth frame.
Phoenix now has two straight Adult Alternative Airplay No. 1s after taking over a decade to earn its first. The band first appeared on the tally with “1901,” which debuted in August 2009 and peaked at No. 6 in April 2010, and also made the list with “Entertainment” (No. 16, 2013), “J-Boy” (No. 9, 2017) and “Ti Amo” (No. 40, 2017).
Concurrently, “Alpha” rises 15-14 on Alternative Airplay, marking the band’s highest charting song since “Trying to Be Cool,” Phoenix’s third top 10, reached No. 10 in 2013. The band boasts one No. 1 on the list: “1901,” which ruled for two weeks in 2010. Its other top 10, “Lisztomania,” reached No. 4 in 2010.
On the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay ranking, “Alpha” ranks at No. 18, after reaching No. 17, with 1.9 million audience impressions, according to Luminate. It’s again Phoenix’s top rank since “Cool,” which hit No. 16 in 2013. The band’s highest-charting song there is “1901,” which reached No. 3, while “Lisztomania” peaked at No. 5.
The track is currently a standalone single. Phoenix’s most recent full-length, Ti Amo, hit No. 3 on the Top Alternative Albums chart in July 2017 and has earned 84,000 equivalent album units to date. Between Ti Amo and “Alpha,” Phoenix released the non-album track “Monologue” and “Identical,” which was recorded for the On the Rocks soundtrack.
