HarbourView Equity Partners has acquired the publishing catalog of Deryck Whibley, the lead singer and main songwriter for Sum 41, the Canadian punk rock band. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.
According to the announcement, the band’s catalog has generated over 15 million album consumption units to date, of which 5.05 million transpired in the U.S., according to Luminate.
Since its inception in October 2021, HarborView, founded by CEO Sherrese Clarke Soares, says it has acquired 40 catalogs spanning thousands of titles and diverse genres, including the publishing and/or recorded music catalogs of Brad Paisley, Lady A, Hollywood Undead, Dre & Vidal and Luis Fonsi.
Sum 41 broke out in 2001 with debut album All Killer No Filler (Aquarius/Island), which peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the hit single “Fat Lip,” which reached No. 66 on the Hot 100 and hit No. 1 on Alternative Airplay. The band released five studio albums on Island, with 2007’s Underclass Hero its highest-charting title, peaking at No. 7 on the Billboard 200, before moving to Hopeless Records, which released 2016’s 13 Voices and 2019’s Order In Decline. Over the years, the band’s catalog has racked up 1.13 billion on-demand streams, according to Luminate. The band continues to tour — its Blame Canada Tour with Simple Plan wraps tonight (Aug. 18) in Denver — and Whibley has hinted at a new album for 2022, though there is no release date as of yet.
Fox Rothschild served as legal counsel to HarbourView in the transaction. Whibley is represented by Jordan Keller and Sarah Smith of Keller Turner Andrews & Ghanem, PLLC.
