Healing isn’t linear. Where some may expect a person to simply “get better” after experiencing trauma, others know that self-improvement and coming to terms with pain is an ongoing, life-long process.
When Demi Lovato unveiled Dancing With The Devil … The Art of Starting Over in early 2021, it seemed like a period on the end of the sentence of the superstar singing about their struggle with addiction, with them even declaring that they were in a “Good Place” on its final song. Of course, that’s not how recovery works — it’s a process of trail, error, progress and regression. It isn’t linear.
While that sentiment might be beautiful, it’s also deeply frustrating; so, Lovato channelled that. Holy Fvck, the star’s hotly-anticipated eighth studio album, is a jolt of pent-up fury at an impossible situation, and it may be one of her best offerings yet. Brimming with fiery lyrics and truly hardcore production, Holy Fvck is Lovato at their angriest.
This is not typical “pop singer does a rock album” music, either — Lovato fully commits to her shift on Holy Fvck. Blending together pop-punk, metal, and various rocks ranging from glam- to prog-, the star hardly ever steps back into their pop star status, always finding an edgy, subversive take on the sound that helped make them a star.
The album also takes on its title in perhaps the most literal sense. Many of the album’s 16 tracks are suffused with some religious imagery, ties to Bible verses and questions about some Christian practices; many of those same songs are also innately horny, depicting sex in as raw and honest a way as Lovato knows how.
But which songs stand out amongst the rest? Check out our ranking, on first listen, of every song off of Demi Lovato’s Holy Fvck below:
