Red Hot Chili Peppers extend their record for the most No. 1s in the history of Billboard‘s Alternative Airplay chart with “Tippa My Tongue,” which vaults from No. 4 to the top of the Oct. 15-dated survey.
The song is the band’s 15th No. 1 and second in 2022, following the four-week rule of “Black Summer” beginning in April. No other act boasts multiple leaders this year.
Red Hot Chili Peppers are now three ahead of their next-closest competitor, Green Day, for the most rulers in the Alternative Airplay tally’s 34-year archives.

The Anthony Kiedis-fronted act first topped Alternative Airplay in October 1991 with “Give It Away.” The group tallied four No. 1s in the ’90s, seven in the 2000s and two in the ’10s prior to its two in the ’20s.
Previously, “Tongue” became Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 27th Alternative Airplay top 10, one behind Foo Fighters for the most in the chart’s history.
Concurrently, “Tongue” crowns the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart for a second week, with 4.7 million audience impressions, up 13%, according to Luminate. It also bullets at No. 9 on Mainstream Rock Airplay, after reaching No. 8 earlier in October, and reached No. 36 on Adult Alternative Airplay last month.
On the multi-metric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs list, “Tongue” places at No. 42 after charting as high as No. 18 upon its September debut. In addition to its radio airplay, the song earned 397,000 official U.S. streams in the week ending Oct. 6.
“Tongue” is the lead single from Return of the Dream Canteen, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ second album of 2022, due this Friday, Oct. 14. Predecessor Unlimited Love launched atop the Billboard 200 dated April 16, marking the band’s second No. 1, and eighth top 10, and has earned 259,000 equivalent album units to date.
