Louis Tomlinson just got real about those Harry Styles conspiracy theories, which have been following both stars since their days in One Direction.
In a Monday interview with the Brazilian news outlet G1 ahead of the Latin American leg of his Faith in the Future World Tour, the singer was asked point-blank about “Larries” — aka the sect of fans who, to this day, are convinced that he and the “As It Was” musician either dated in the past or are still secretly a couple now.
“What’s tough is — I realized this some years ago — there is nothing I can say,” he said, shrugging. “There is nothing I can do to dispel the believers of that conspiracy.
“They are so intertwined with what they believe to be the truth now that they won’t actually see the truth for what it is,” Tomlinson continued. “I’d be lying if I … it does irritate me a little bit, but it is just kind of the nature of the job. At times it gets far too personal. I have my son, Freddie. He is the most important person in my life. Occasionally, it kind of broaches some stuff that’s really unfair.”
Speculation about Tomlinson, who shares 8-year-old Freddie Reign with stylist Briana Jungwirth, and his supposed romance with Styles dates back to 2010, when One Direction was first formed on The X Factor. Even after the group disbanded in 2015 — after which the two stars and their former bandmates Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Liam Payne all pursued solo careers — fan fiction, fan art and online forums dedicated to the “Larry” conspiracy continued going strong.
So strong, in fact, that Sam Levinson’s Euphoria featured a graphic sex scene starring animated versions of Tomlinson and Styles in a 2019 episode, leading the “Always You” artist to tweet his disapproval shortly after it aired.
“It kind of just is this thing that exists now — there’s nothing I can do about it, there’s nothing I can say about it to stop people from making up what they want to make up,” Tomlinson added in the new interview. “So, so be it.”
