It was intended, according to Stella Lefty’s lyrics, as a little “something to do.”
But a meet-up with fellow country artist Vincent Mason turned into something much greater. Eight months later, they’re fully public about a relationship that developed from that original meeting, and her something to do is now “Something to Lose” on two fronts — it’s a way to describe the value they put on their romantic connection, but it’s also the title of their first duet.
“Once we started dating,” she says, “it was just this inevitable thing, like, ‘There’s this song that’s so personal about our relationship and the way that things started and the way that I feel about you.’ It just made so much sense.”
It was not an ideal time, career-wise, to start a new relationship. Mason had been hitting it hard as a new artist for several years, taking every promotional opportunity available and finally on his way to his first top 20 on Billboard’s Country Airplay with “Wish You Well.” Lefty’s “Thinking ‘Bout You” was bringing her first real taste of commercial significance, leading to her February 2026 signing with Atlantic/Outpost, and the schedule she anticipated didn’t have room for someone new.
“I felt like I was [just being] born into this,” she says, “like, entering for the first time, and so I felt like I was in a weird place. I was like, ‘Oh, my god, I need to accept being alone because I’m experiencing all these things for the first time, and I need to figure this out.’”
Mason, after seeing her on TikTok, sent her a direct message. She responded, and they met up in early 2026 at Schulman’s, a neighborhood bar in East Nashville. Just to be safe, she brought along a few industry friends: songwriters Grace Enger (“Boston”) and Jacob “JKash” Hindlin (“Last Night,” “After All the Bars are Closed”) and writer-producer Joe Reeves (Thomas Rhett, Lil Durk).
“Grace got a burger inside while [Lefty] was talking to Vincent outside,” Reeves recalls. “We were drinking chartreuse, and it was quite a funny night.”
Monumental, as well, since the two singers hit it off immediately. Both had to leave town, but when their schedules lined up again, they saw each other for several days. Enger and Lefty were sharing quarters, so Enger witnessed the start of the relationship. The two women ended up writing with Jon Decious (“4x4xU,” “Phone, Keys, Wallet”) and Luke Dick (“Choosin’ Texas,” “Don’t Come Lookin’”) in Nashville on Feb. 18, spending six hours on another song, though Lefty was somewhat distracted.
“While we were writing this other song, I kept singing something about ‘wild horses,’” Lefty notes, “and so when we finished the first song, I was like, ‘Can we just try something for five seconds? I have this idea, but I don’t know what it is.’ Grace started playing chords on the guitar, and we literally wrote the song in 20 minutes or something.”
Her initial idea turned into the first line of the chorus, “I was a wild horse built for runnin’,” about a woman who is unexpectedly considering a romantic commitment. Monogamy, of course, implies sacrificing certain freedoms.
“I thought about the [Kris] Kristofferson song, ‘Bobby McGee,’ you know, ‘Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose,’” Decious says. “I was like, ‘What’s the opposite of that?’ So, ‘Something to Lose,’ and then we kept throwing around lines.”
They opened the song with a nod to her independent streak, then alluded to the Schulman’s introduction — “2:00 a.m. in a Southern state” — and edged into the chorus. Enger, of course, knew firsthand who they were writing about. The men hadn’t a clue.
“She kept giggling, as if there was some new love in her life,” Decious says. “It would come to different lines — I think ‘blue eyes comin’,’ I think maybe it was ‘green’ initially — and she’s like, ‘No, he’s got blue eyes.’ We were picking up on the idea that maybe there was somebody new in her life, but she didn’t mention it, and she certainly never said, ‘Oh, this is about Vincent Mason’.”
Songs about new love usually lean upbeat and optimistic, but “Something to Lose” approaches the topic with caution and fragility. “I got good at bein’ lonely ‘til you showed me I was better with you,” she sings, but the plaintive sonics convey reservation: the pangs of excitement might only be temporary.
“I think it’s an overall reflection of where he was at,” she says, “and what I was sensing from him, and my fear of, you know, there’s something real here, but ‘What if you don’t want that?’”
The writers made a quick guitar/vocal demo on a cellphone, each receiving a copy by 4 p.m. At 7:01 p.m., Decious reconnected with the group: “Y’all, just listening back, and this song is killer.” At some point, Lefty and Enger played the song for Mason. Lefty later sent him the demo. And she told Mason it was about him. “That was a good bit of information to find out,” he says. “And then she was like, ‘You got to sing it with me.’”
He said yes, but not just because she was asking. “I do love Stella,” he says, “but I would not have got on there if it was a bad song.”
Reeves built the track in his home studio in Los Angeles’ Echo Park, playing all of the stringed instruments — guitars, mandolin, banjo and bass — intentionally keeping it sparse so their voices would stand out. The moments when he did step forward were significant to the flow of the track, such as a mid-chorus turn-around that layers acoustic guitar and a Telecaster with old-school tremolo.
The key was initially difficult for Vincent, but they re-pitched it in time for an April 10 vocal session. Reeves and vocal producer Brett Truitt (Waylon Wyatt, Maddox Batson) were present as the couple recorded their vocals together, holding hands in the closet-sized vocal booth at Truitt’s Nashville studio. “We’re like little kids,” Lefty says.
It was, Mason adds, “maybe a little awkward, maybe a little scary,” since they were singing together for the first time. A day later, Evan Hutchings overdubbed drums on the track. Reeves also enlisted London-based steel guitarist Joe Harvey-Whyte, who contributed a Poco/Flying Burrito Brothers feel.
“I don’t think what he draws from intuitively is Nashville voicings, but there is a riff he plays halfway through Vincent’s verse that, in my opinion, makes the song complete,” Reeves says. “I know both Vincent and Stella are very happy with that, because whenever we do it live, they’re like, ‘We need that riff. Someone needs to play that.’”
“Something to Lose” went out to the world in May, and the couple found several opportunities to play it live. As Lefty’s “Boston” ran its course, Atlantic/Outpost teed up “Something to Lose” for country radio, releasing it via PlayMPE on Sept. 22.
“People really took to it on TikTok in a way that it just kind of raised its hand,” Mason says.
It’s at No. 28 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart dated Nov. 7, and No. 13 on the parallel Hot Country Songs. Their relationship has developed further in the eight months since she wrote “Something to Lose,” and they’re both confident they’ll keep growing together, with “Something” reminding them of their start as a couple.
“It’s been such a crazy year for me personally, and also for Vincent personally,” she says. “He’s helped me get through so much of the things that I’ve been dealing with, and I’m so grateful that we’re doing this together.
