It took 25 years after their forming, 20 years after their biggest album’s release, and about 15 years after they went on hiatus for the first time, but emo paragons My Chemical Romance have finally scored a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200.
MCR’s 2006 masterwork The Black Parade tops the albums chart this week, shooting 139-1 on the listing, thanks largely to a new deluxe anniversary reissue that activated the (somehow still-growing) fanbase in a major way. It marks the set’s first visit to No. 1, after it was held at No. 2 during its initial release by the blockbuster Hannah Montana soundtrack.
How huge a deal is it to the band? And what could be the next classic album to be propelled to No. 1 by a 20-year anniversary reissue? Billboard discusses these questions and more below.
1. MCR scores the first No. 1 album in the band’s history with its 20-year-old Black Parade album. On a scale of 1-10, how big a deal is this for the band?
Eric Renner Brown: 6. My Chemical Romance has had — and continues to have — a huge career without having ever notched a No. 1 album. But it’s still a cool thing for a veteran artist to have on its resume, and further burnishes the band’s bona fides.
Kyle Denis: 10. A No. 1 album is always something worth celebrating, but finally securing that achievement during the 20th anniversary of your most beloved album (that never went No. 1 during its initial run) is far more impressive.
Josh Glicksman: Has to be at least a 7, right? My Chemical Romance doesn’t strike me as the type of band that’s hinging its success solely on chart performance, but a No. 1 album — particularly for the group’s seminal project — is quite the feather in its marching-band hat. It’s the type of achievement that helps grow their following among a new generation of listeners and makes the last handful of dates on the Long Live The Black Parade Tour that much more of a hot-ticket item.
Lyndsey Havens: 10. It’s totally awesome to see and a big deal for a deserving band. This album has become a seminal work in music history and culture, and it’s nice to see that being celebrated 20 years later — to me, it actually feels more on time than if the album had debuted at No. 1 when it first arrived. But they may not agree there.
Andrew Unterberger: A 9, at least. This is pretty unprecedented, for an album to be so beloved that a new reissue — which has some cool new-ish bonus stuff, but certainly not an entire treasure trove’s worth — not only sends it back up the charts, but all the way to No. 1? From a band who hasn’t released an album since Obama’s first term? That really just confirms that the bond that MCR has with its fans and rock audiences in general is a generational one.
2. Plenty of other classic albums have received deluxe anniversary reissues in recent years — why do you think this one is the first to boost the album to No. 1 on the Billboard 200?
Eric Renner Brown: It’s a confluence of factors. The band’s reunion capitalized on a lot of pent-up demand, and its massive reunion tour is specifically tied to this album. This deluxe edition is far from the Bob Dylan-type of reissue that features several discs with every outtake from an album’s sessions – so this album’s success isn’t being driven by diehards parsing alternative takes, so much as it is harnessing the existing interest for The Black Parade.
Kyle Denis: Since regrouping in 2017, My Chemical Romance has hit the touring/festival circuit with real gusto, including its Long Live the Black Parade tour, which ran for a year and a half with 47 shows across four continents. The trek — which officially wraps later this month (Nov. 22) — finds the band playing the entire Black Parade album, reasserting it as a seminal piece of work for MCR and also introducing it to newer, younger listeners. That kind of lead-up to an anniversary reissue is incredibly helpful — especially when the new edition doesn’t skimp on the goodies, with fans getting three new songs and three new live renditions.
Josh Glicksman: It benefits from the fact that the upper echelon of the Billboard 200 isn’t exactly bustling with fresh releases: Nine of the top 10 projects on the Nov. 7 chart have been on the chart at least 20 weeks (Zach Bryan’s Young Manhood And Other Donatable Organs is at No. 7 in its second week). That said, MCR had its best-ever week at vinyl, which is really the key for these reissues to take hold in a significant commercial way. There needs to be a physical aspect to the release that’s captivating to a wide audience — as of now, streaming alone won’t be enough of a difference-maker.
Lyndsey Havens: I think two primary factors are behind the No. 1 boost: The album was deserving, and the band was making major headlines at the time of its release. Not every album, not even every classic album, needs a deluxe edition. But this anniversary reissue felt wanted, and also additive, making an already great album worth revisiting. And then when you consider that the band had just unveiled a brand new highly detailed and charged concept for its ongoing tour — so charged, in fact, it spawned a now-dropped lawsuit from the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders’ parent company — even more casual fans may have been curious enough to listen in.
Andrew Unterberger: Good timing and lots of variants. The Black Parade deluxe dropped in a week without many major new releases, and one in which the likely number-one-by-default candidates were all months-old releases without any brand-new boosts to speak of. But if there was only one edition of the new reissue available for purchase, it probably still wouldn’t have gotten within striking distance of the No. 1; releasing 15 separate vinyl variants (and more on cassette and CD) appears to have been the trick to activating the band’s already highly excitable base.
3. Twenty years after its mainstream peak and 15 years after its initial split, MCR is very arguably more popular than ever. What do you think the biggest factor behind that continued commercial growth is?
Eric Renner Brown: This is at least part of a reaction to the State of Rock in 2026: Rock fans desperately want a big rock band to root for, and My Chemical Romance fits the bill. Throughout its career, even when it was headlining arenas the first time around, MCR has felt like the underdog. Add in how influential the band was — and the cyclical nature of nostalgia bringing back ’00s pop culture — and it totally tracks that MCR is having a moment. Just look at some of the other now-legacy alternative acts from the ’00s that are arguably bigger than ever: The Strokes, The Killers, Death Cab For Cutie, Weezer and so on.
Kyle Denis: I would again credit the band’s touring over the past few years, as well as its dedication to a sound that’s been relatively absent from the center of mainstream music recently. And, for what it’s worth, I’m willing to bet a deeper sense of community emerged between MCR and their fans after suffering the losses of longtime engineer Doug McKean in 2022 and drummer Bob Bryar in 2024. Also, MCR is still one of the best when it comes to world-building, and the multi-decade narrative universe they’ve created with The Black Parade is alluring enough on its own.
Josh Glicksman: Touring, and more specifically, a concerted focus on growing its global audience. On both of MCR’s last two tours (2022-23’s Reunion and 2025-26’s Long Live the Black Parade), the group has spent extensive time abroad, hitting all sorts of international markets from the U.K. to Australia to Brazil to Japan. MCR has continued to feed its core base across the world with performances, and in doing so, welcomed more and more fans to the base.
Lyndsey Havens: I think one of the things people are most drawn to about MCR is that the band has never really wavered on its identity or its beliefs — and never shied away from putting both front and center. What made MCR feel exciting then and fresh today is exactly that, and it’s apparent in the community that rallies around this band and shows up for its concerts. There’s real love and admiration there, but also an acceptance and authenticity that feels encouraged and protected.
Andrew Unterberger: Well, this seems to be the way of ’00s rock in general right now, doesn’t it? Everyone from System of a Down to The Strokes seems to be playing to bigger crowds than ever. Young audiences are embracing the ’00s as its own version of classic rock, while millennials who never lost the love have more spending money than ever. And MCR’s music has aged extremely well while remaining in relatively short supply; in this case, the relative lack of new music from the band may have actually helped in spurring purchases of this reissue, since there’s no new releases from the band for it to have to compete with.
4. Anniversary reissues have been more chart-consequential than ever in 2026, boosting albums ranging from The Beatles’ Rubber Soul to Mac Miller’s The Divine Feminine back to the Billboard 200’s top 10. Is that more of a fluke of timing, or do you see a specific reason for this anniversary reissue chart boom?
Eric Renner Brown: On the one hand, it feels like a fluke that one could chalk up to streaming and how charts are calculated: Whereas an album reissue used to entail going to a store and buying a copy of an album — one that a customer might already have a previous edition of — there’s a far lower barrier of entry now to checking out one of these reissues. (Your streaming platform of choice might even prompt you to!)
I’m a huge Beatles fan, and love Rubber Soul, but I would not have bought a deluxe reissue to have access to demos and instrumental versions from the sessions; streaming allowed me to listen to them once, and I doubt I will again. On the other hand, many of these albums are timeless and continue to resonate, and today’s streaming culture has embraced exhuming catalog music — something that applies not only to old singles, but to old albums.
Kyle Denis: I’d say it’s less of a fluke of timing and more of an indictment of this era of nostalgia that we’ve been in since the lockdown portion of the pandemic. In a year where old songs from Michael Jackson and Justin Bieber ran up the Hot 100, it’s not too surprising to see a similar phenomenon happening on the Billboard 200.
But that doesn’t mean an anniversary reissue is a shortcut to a new chart peak — you still must give fans something worth buying or at least be a legitimate legacy act. The Beatles are The Beatles; Mac Miller’s reissue came amid the resurgence of that LP’s “Cinderella” track, and Beyoncé (who returned to the Billboard 200 top 10 with a reissue of her 2006 B’Day album) and MCR gave fans tons of new music to sink their teeth into.
Josh Glicksman: I don’t see any sort of fluke here — acts are capitalizing on anniversaries of any kind to bring projects back into the limelight. Ultimately, I think it circles back to two aforementioned points: First, the reissues are typically associated with an intensive physical component. The fans that are excited about the new release want to be able to buy a collector’s item to celebrate the anniversary. And second, a somewhat stagnant Billboard 200 allows for such spikes in sales to be reflected in a significant way on the chart.
Lyndsey Havens: I think to my earlier point, these are also great albums from beloved and missed acts. It combines feelings of nostalgia and loss with truly excellent music, so I don’t think it’s a fluke. I also wouldn’t necessarily call it a trend, because I really don’t think it’s something just any artist or act can pull off.
Andrew Unterberger: It does feel like another consequence of the ever-growing catalog market, and the accompanying shrinking of the contemporary pop market. Only a handful of new acts a year develop with the profile and following to entice that kind of spending on physical product from their fans, but there’s no shortage of such acts to be found in the past.
5. What’s another album turning 20 in the next few years that you could see topping the BB200 as a result of a big reissue?
Eric Renner Brown: As much as I would love TV On The Radio’s Dear Science to have a major chart moment when it turns 20, the clearest analogue here isn’t a beloved indie album gaining new traction — it’s an artist that was commercially successful 20 years ago, has continued to grow, and can reintroduce its early works to newer fans who might not have a strong connection with it. I have to go with MCR’s fellow Warped alums Paramore here: Hayley Williams is bigger than ever, and while Riot! was huge upon its 2007 release, eight of Paramore’s Hot 100 entires (including its three highest-charting) have come since then. “Misery Business” and “crushcrushcrush” were top 5s on Alternative Airplay, but feel primed for a new audience — and for fans who were there the first time to reconnect with.
Kyle Denis: I think there are a few albums with the potential to do so! Hilary Duff has accrued a bunch of goodwill with this year’s Luck… Or Something LP and its accompanying tours, so I can see a world where she’s able to turn the now-iconic “With Love” dance break into a chart-topping reissue of Dignity.
Sticking with the pop girls, depending on how much effort they and their teams are willing to put in, I think Rihanna or Britney Spears could pull this off with Good Girl Gone Bad and Blackout, respectively. Good Girl is obviously stacked with hits, and streaming audiences love the deep cut “Breakin’ Dishes,” while Blackout is often hailed as a “pop bible” by fans and artists alike.
And to bring it back to the rock bands, I’d also keep my eye on Paramore’s Riot!, which houses the monster hits “That’s What You Get” and “Misery Business.” I really don’t think it would take much for the band to turn that album’s No. 2 peak into a No. 1.
Josh Glicksman: How about Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad? It debuted at No. 2 in 2007 and still hangs around on the chart (it spends its 258th week on the chart at No. 44 on the Nov. 7-dated list). Particularly with Jay-Z’s recent announcement as Super Bowl halftime show headliner, if “Umbrella” were to make its way into the setlist, followed by a physical reissue with some sort of new single or live performance, that feels like a very safe bet for No. 1.
Lyndsey Havens: Oof. There are a lot of albums coming up that I think are perfect, and also are such sonic time capsules that I’m feeling careful about what I wish for… I’m thinking of Radiohead’s In Rainbows, Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible, Paramore’s Riot!… One album that I love and wouldn’t mind a reissue of is Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad, which turns 20 next May. It’s not my favorite Rih album, but it does house one of my favorite Rih tracks (“Umbrella”). Maybe Jay will bring her out for it at the Superbowl, which could get the wheels turning on a re-recorded version, which could lead to a reissue as a means for Rihanna to drop some new music (even if she’s been sitting on it for 20 years) without having to do too much and without the pressure of creating something entirely new.
Andrew Unterberger: Radiohead’s In Rainbows — which has grown into perhaps the band’s most beloved album, and which many fans even from 2007 likely still don’t own on any physical formats, due to its initial pay-what-you-want digital release. A big 20-years-on look (a la the Kid A Mnesia two-fer the band put out in 2021) would undoubtedly get a ton of attention, and a ton of fans opening their wallets accordingly.
