The estate of Chris Cornell has released a lyric video for the late Soundgarden singer’s cover of John Lennon’s “Watching The Wheels.” The clip for the song, from the recently released posthumous Cornell covers album No One Sings Like You Anymore, opens with an image of Cornell strumming an acoustic guitar projected onto a sign on a busy city street. Bathed in deep red, the visual takes viewers on a tour around crowded cities, showing the kind of manic shoulder-to-shoulder hustle-bustle that is unthinkable during these COVID-19 pandemic times.
With the lyrics about stepping out of the spotlight scrolling back and forth across the screen alongside images of Cornell jamming with his kids, the clip pays homage to the original’s genesis: Lennon’s decision to recede from his global fame to focus on raising his son with Yoko Ono.
Cornell hand-picked and sequenced the collection as a celebration of the artists and songs that inspired him.The collection was recorded in 2016 and it is the late Soundgarden singer’s final fully completed studio album, with takes on Ghostland Observatory’s “Sad Sad City,” Harry Nilsson’s “Jump Into The Fire,” Carl Hall’s “You Don’t Know Nothing About Love,” ELO’s “Showdown,” Terry Reid’s “To Be Treated Rite”, Lorraine Ellison’s “Stay With Me Baby,” and his iconic cover of the Prince-written “Nothing Compares 2 You,” as well as songs by Janis Joplin and Electric Light Orchestra.
The physical version of the album — which was performed entirely by Cornell and Brendan O’Brien, who also produced and mixed it — will be available on March 19. The collection also features Cornell’s take on Guns N’ Roses’ “Patience,” which earned the singer his first solo Billboard No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart earlier this year.
