Celebrating “America’s day … democracy’s day,” in the words of 46th president Joe Biden, Lady Gaga took to the steps of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday (Jan. 20) in one of her signature statement outfits to sing the National Anthem before Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were sworn into office in Washington, D.C.
The singer not only entered the history books with her stirring rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” but — in her inimitable style — managed to steal the show for a few minutes thanks to another instant classic ensemble.
To honor former senator and two-term VP Biden as well as history-making former Sen. Harris, Gaga appeared in what many instantly described as a Hunger Games-inspired outfit that featured a billowing, floor-length custom Schiaparelli red gown, long-sleeved black top accented with an oversized gold peace dove brooch and black leather gloves. She accessorized it with an all-gold microphone, an updo with a twisted braid woven with black fabric, and golden in-ear monitors accented by flowers around her ears.
The internet, of course, had so many thoughts and jokes, from posts about how “they turned a Lady Gaga concert into a presidential inauguration” to the expected Katniss and Effie jokes.
