The pandemic opened up the floodgates for online shopping, but it also opened up Billie Eilish to realistic prices of food versus how much she thought it costs.
The 19-year-old global phenomenon told Vanity Fair in her latest cover story that adulting has introduced her to pragmatic prices after she “grew up with no money.” Now, stardom has catapulted her into tremendous wealth, from selling multiplatinum records to selling out arena tours. (Although, the VF cover story stated, Eilish’s team debunked previous reports that she took home a $25 million paycheck from her upcoming AppleTV+ documentary Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry.)
“It’s a really weird position I’m in. I feel kind of stupid because I’m like, I don’t know how much Froot Loops are. I tried to order one box of Froot Loops and I was like, Oh yeah, sure. It’s $35. I didn’t know that that’s expensive,” she said while raising her eyebrows. “I ordered 70 boxes.”
She ordered 70 mini boxes of the cereal, which does cost $35.70 on Amazon. Similarly, Ellen DeGeneres quizzed Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates in 2018 on grocery item prices, and he first guessed a box of Totino’s pizza rolls cost $22 (It costs $8.98). Sometimes gaining a fortune means not losing sight of the value of a dollar. But the teen pop superstar has gained a lot of insight on her mental health while rising to fame as quickly as she has.
The “My Future” singer revealed she was “not in a great mental place” while recording her Billboard 200-topping and Grammy-winning debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? at the age of 16. She’s since started seeing a therapist and feels more “settled.” And that feeling has translated into her newest music, too.
She says her upcoming sophomore album “feels exactly how I want it to. There isn’t one song, or one part of one song, that I wish was this or that I wish it was that.”
And Eilish isn’t the only talented youth highlighted in the March 2021 cover. Quil Lemons, who photographed her, became the youngest photographer to shoot the cover for Vanity Fair at age 23. Eilish is also wearing Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty line in the cover shoot.
