EGOT winner John Legend is going for the Husband of the Year award next after sharing some sweet words of wisdom about his marriage and parental journey with Chrissy Teigen.
He sat down with E! News Daily Pop co-host Lilliana Vazquez on Tuesday (May 4) to talk about what first-time fathers can do for their wives. Legend has been married to model and cookbook author Teigen for eight years, and the A-list couple have two children: 5-year-old daughter Luna and 2-year-old son Miles. He’s proven time and again how to weather any storm with Teigen, from commending her on her “powerful” essay about dealing with postpartum depression after giving birth to Luna to dedicating his “Never Break” performance at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards to her following the loss of their third baby named Jack.
“As a husband, I feel like one, it’s vey difficult right after delivery for a woman. A lot of women deal with postpartum depression. There’s a lot going on with your body and your hormones,” Legend told Vazquez, who is pregnant with her first child. “As a husband, we’ve got to be reliable. We’ve got to be a rock. We’ve got to be there for our wives. We’ve got to be as present and available as possible to help with whatever needs to be done.”
He related the social-media backlash Teigen has faced — which led her to quit Twitter in March before returning last month — to another famous woman who’s dealt with trolling on a similar scale: Simone Biles, the most decorated American gymnast. Legend contributed the empowerment anthem “Take a Look” to Biles and skincare brand SK-II’s short film series VS Trolls, which tells the stories of six Olympic athletes as they prepare for the 2021 Tokyo Olympic games this July.
“Of course we are all as Americans so proud of Simone Biles. She’s one of the greatest athletes we’ve ever seen in the Olympics, but she’s also dealt with a lot of challenges so we wanted to kind of address all of that within this film,” Legend says. “I felt like I was able to empathize with Simone’s story because I’ve been right next to my wife when she’s dealt with online trolls. I feel like women get a lot more negativity online than men do, and particularly for female athletes often times they have to deal with, ‘Oh are they hot or not?’ at the same time they’re dealing with, ‘Are they really good at their sport?’”
