A home-brewed father-and-son LEGO set paying homage to retired dance music legends Daft Punk‘s iconic Pyramid stage has helped spark a new partnership between the house of bricks and the “Robot Rock” duo. The LEGO Group announced on Thursday morning (Oct. 22) that its new partnership with the French duo aims to “inspire and remix fandoms” with a pact that promises “product, content and brand experiences” celebrating the creativity and communities of both brands.
The team-up was announced via a short film in which the minifigures representing helmeted French electronic producers Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo follow a holographic red brick through a murky landscape until they reach the “gates of play” that unlock a LEGO brick console. The teaser film is soundtracked by the incessant bass line from “Voyager” (from 2001’s Discovery album) and the title track from the 2005 LP Human After All.
“What makes this partnership so special is the enduring appeal both brands share. Like the LEGO brand, Daft Punk inspires generations through creativity, innovation and a deep connection with fans,” said LEGO Group chief product & marketing officer Julia Goldin in a statement about the partnership. “We’re excited to build on these foundations to reimagine the Daft Punk legacy in a fresh and unexpected way, creating something unique that resonates with fans across all ages. This is just the beginning of a bigger journey – a creative collab made for fans ready to lose themselves to play.“
The new collab was spawned through the LEGO Ideas community, which encourages fans to submit their original concepts for sets that could be turned into official LEGO products. In this case, it was a father and son from Luxembourg whose build won the Grand Prize of the LEGO Ideas Music to Our Ears challenge in 2020, where 10,00 supporters helped boost it to the next level of becoming an official LEGO set.
Their submission, a recreation of the legendary pyramid-shaped stage from the duo’s 2007 Alive tour, began as a family project during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, according to Patrick Harboun.
“This all started as a creative escape during lockdown between my son and I because of our shared love of Daft Punk and LEGO building,” he said in a statement. “We never dared imagine it would take off in this way. Watching our passion project become part of an official collaboration is an incredible experience, and it’s a reminder of what makes the LEGO Ideas community so special. That a simple idea, shared by fans, really can become something much bigger.”
In addition to the set, the partnership will bring Daft Punk to a range of other LEGO tie-ins, “through a mashup of surprising events and content that crosses music, culture and creative spaces,” according to the company.
With more details about the collaboration to come in 2027, Cédric Hervet, creative director for Daft Punk said that the first effort is a perfect launching point for the collab. “The pyramid stage is one of the most recognizable expressions of Daft Punk’s visual world, so it feels fitting that this fan-created design will be center stage of this partnership,” he said. “Fans have always played an important part in Daft Punk’s story, and we are excited to see that creativity reflected through the LEGO universe.”
